“There is a high need for owner's to recognize the commitment to Lean especially in the pre-design phases of major builds.  Successful projects need to implement Lean in the pre-planning & pre-design phases of the project.”                     ~ Mike Hogan

Plan on attending on Thursday October 1st to hear Mike talk about his experiences and successes in implementing Lean Healthcare in Capital Construction Projects!

Current State:

· The healthcare system’s recognition of Lean implementation

· How does Lean affect  new design?

· Examples of some current hospitals and dangerous pitfalls

Future State:

· When you should employ Lean principles into the process?

· Who are the key stakeholders that should be involved?

· What are the key elements of Lean that you need to know?

Lean Steps in the Pre-Project Planning Process:

· Establishment of a lean planning committee

· Defining the current issues that are leading to the new design

· Defining the exact lean needs that are to be met by this project

· Establishing the parameters of lean needs

· Creating a lean project program and lean implementation schedule

Ortho Clinical Diagnostics ValuMetrix® Services helps achieve impressive operational improvements with their clients using Process Excellence, a systematic approach to quality and operational process improvement developed by Johnson & Johnson. Process Excellence combines the tools and methodologies of Six Sigma, Lean Thinking and Design Excellence to drive dramatic improvements in all areas of business performance.

Current projects with their customers have consistently delivered outstanding results:

· A laboratory cut annual labor costs by $950,000 and avoided $1.2 million in construction costs.

· Quality initiative reduced rework and saved more than $270,000 per year.

· A Lab improved turnaround time by 54%, and cut costs by $250,000 per year and saved $78,000 in overtime annually.

Michael Hogan has over 24 years experience in operations management and continuous improvement. He has studied and applied Lean Manufacturing methodologies for over 12 years.

In healthcare Mike has applied lean principles to nutritional services, laboratories, surgical departments, emergency departments, registration processes, radiology, hospitalist’s, discharge planning, inpatient flow, and other hospital service areas.

For the last 4 years he has been involved in ‘Lean’ design assisting hospital planning teams and working with their architects to construct their new hospitals and clinics with Lean methodologies.

LCI Cascadia Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Cascadia Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI serves the BC, WA, and OR region, providing local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
